Introducing ManaBat: An Isometric Action RPG Love Letter
Introducing ManaBat
After months of planning and prototyping, I’m excited to finally reveal what I’ve been working on: ManaBat, an isometric action RPG that combines everything I loved about the games that shaped my childhood.
The Inspiration
ManaBat is a love letter to three games that defined my gaming experience:
- Secret of Mana (SNES) - The elemental companion system and magic ring mechanics
- Dynasty Warriors 3 (Xbox) - Epic horde combat where you feel genuinely powerful
- Kingdom Under Fire (Xbox) - The perfect blend of frontline combat and strategic unit commands
What Makes ManaBat Different?
8 Elemental Companions
You’re attuned to 2 elementals at a time, each with 4 unique abilities. But here’s the twist—when you combine compatible elements, you unlock powerful hybrid abilities:
- Earth + Water = Swamp/Growth magic
- Fire + Air = Lightning storms
- Water + Air = Ice manipulation
- And many more…
Living Procedural World
The world of ManaBat spans 1000 in-game years. NPCs aren’t just quest-givers—they have lineages, memories, and motivations that evolve across generations. Your choices don’t just affect the present; they echo through time, shaping future civilizations.
Deep Weapon Combat
Every weapon type has a unique combo system, timing windows, and strategic advantages. Combat is designed to be intuitive to learn but deeply rewarding to master.
Current Status
I’m currently in the prototype phase, focusing on:
- ✅ Movement system with elemental traversal (slippery ice, sticky surfaces, momentum slopes)
- 🔄 Elemental switching and ability framework
- 🔄 Combat animations and weapon combos
- ⏳ Procedural world generation (coming next)
My goal is to have a solid combat and magic prototype by the end of February 2026, then move on to building the procedural systems that will bring this world to life.
Why I’m Building This
I believe games should maximize player agency and choice. Too many modern games hold your hand or lock you into predetermined paths. ManaBat is about giving you a living sandbox where your decisions matter—not just in the moment, but across generations.
This is also a test of my thesis: that indie developers can build sustainable studios through decentralized infrastructure, without publishers or VCs. More on that in future posts.
What’s Next?
I’ll be sharing weekly development updates on Twitter (@gimpedherogames) and this blog. Expect:
- Elemental ability showcases
- Combat system breakdowns
- Design philosophy deep dives
- Behind-the-scenes prototyping challenges
